Swimming in Devil's Pool puts you right on the 108-meter (354-foot) drop of Victoria Falls. You reach the pool by boat from the Zambian side of the Zambezi River. You must book a guided tour to enter the water.

When is Devil's Pool open?

The pool typically opens from mid-August to January during the low-water season.

High water makes the pool dangerous from February to July. Guides constantly monitor the Zambezi River levels. They only allow tourists in when currents are slow enough to swim safely.

How do I get to Devil's Pool?

You must book a guided Livingstone Island tour from the Zambian side of the river.

Boats launch from Livingstone and take you to the island perched on the lip of the falls. From the island, you swim a short distance to the pool. You cannot hike there on your own.

Is it safe to swim in Devil's Pool?

Yes, if you go during the open season with licensed guides.

A rock lip naturally stops you from going over the 108-meter edge. Guides give a safety briefing and stay in the water with you. Never swim outside designated safe spots due to strong currents and crocodiles.

Can children visit Livingstone Island and the pool?

Children under 10 are generally not permitted on Livingstone Island tours.

The boat ride and the swim require basic physical coordination. Parents must closely supervise older children at all times near the water.

What should I bring to Devil's Pool?

Pack quick-dry clothing and a waterproof dry bag for your valuables.

You also need sturdy water shoes or sandals with secure straps. Do not wear flip-flops. High-SPF water-resistant sunscreen and a passport (for border crossings) are essential.

Do I need a visa to visit from Zimbabwe?

You need to enter Zambia to access the boats for Livingstone Island.

The KAZA UniVisa ($50) lets tourists cross easily between Zambia and Zimbabwe. If you stay in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, allow extra time for passport checks at the border.
