The Zambezi River cuts through the Batoka Gorge, creating intense commercial white-water rafting. The water level dictates which sections of the river are safe to run.
What is the low-water rafting season?
The low-water season typically runs from August to December. This is the only time you can run all 25 rapids.
During these months, the river drops to a safe level. This exposes the famous Batoka Gorge rapids directly below Victoria Falls. Trips usually start near The Boiling Pot.

What is the high-water rafting season?
High-water season lasts from January to July. Trips during this time skip the first 10 rapids.
Intense water volume makes the upper section too dangerous. At peak flow, 500 million liters of water plummet over the falls every minute. Guides move the launch site downstream for safety.
| Season | Months | Rapids Run |
|---|---|---|
| Low Water | August to December | All 25 |

How difficult are the rapids on the Zambezi?
The Zambezi features commercial grades ranging from III to V.

What is the combo rafting and swim option?
Some operators combine rafting with a swim below Victoria Falls.
You raft to the base of the falls first. Then you scramble through rocks to reach the natural spray pools. This lets you stand inside the mist falling from 100 meters above.

What should you wear for a rafting trip?
Pack quick-dry clothing and sturdy water shoes with secure straps.
Flip-flops are not suitable for the river. Wear quick-dry shorts or a swimsuit. Bring high-SPF water-resistant sunscreen and a hat that fits under a helmet. Leave valuables at your hotel or in a dry bag.
How long does the rafting take?
Rafting the Zambezi usually requires a half to a full day.
Operators pick you up from hotels in Livingstone. The drive takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Prepare for a steep and physically demanding hike down into the gorge before getting on the water.
